Time: 18:00 SAST
Place: The Commune, 14 Reserve street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg
You are cordially invited by Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research to an in-person launch of Dossier number 53, titled This Land is the Land of Our Ancestors, by Yvonne Phyllis
This dossier departs from the generally accepted assumptions that have traditionally shaped the way that the land question has been framed as an elite nationalist project in South Africa: instead, the focus is on farmworkers as workers of the land, as farm dwellers, and as key contributors to the land debate. The dossier presents an historical account of the plight of farmworkers, arguing that land distribution along racial lines, as well as the devaluation of the labour of Black people through history, together constitute an unresolved issue of injustice.
Venue: The CommuneAuthor: Yvonne Phyllis is the Co-Director of Operations at The Forge. Yvonne has published articles in New Frame relating to land matters and has directed a documentary film about farm workers, produced by The Forge, titled Nyarha Farmworkers.
