The Commune invites you to an in-person launch of Marikana: A People’s History by Julian Brown
Drawing on interviews with strikers and their families, Julian Brown tells the stories of those who embarked on the strike, those who were killed, and the attempts of the families of the deceased to identify and bury their dead. Brown also provides a comprehensive review of the subsequent Commission of Inquiry and points to the politics of solidarity with the Marikana miners that have emerged since.
Author: Julian Brown is an Associate Professor of Political Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. He is the author of three books: South Africa’s Insurgent Citizens: On Dissent and the Possibility of Politics (2015), The Road to Soweto: Resistance and the Uprising of 16 June 1976 (2016) and, most recently, Marikana: A People’s History (2022).
Discussant: Nomzamo Zondo is an attorney and the Executive Director of the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI). She represented the families of the deceased Marikana mineworkers.
