The Commune invites you to an in-person launch of From Kippie To Kippies and Beyond by Sam Mathe – a discussion with the author followed by an all vinyl DJ set by DJ Okapi showcasing musicians featured in the book.

Author: Sam Mathe is an award-winning journalist, poet, magazine publisher and author with a particular interest in South African theatre, television dramas and music. He’s the founding editor of Jazz Life Magazine and contributing author of Brenda Fassie: I’m Not Your Weekend Special (2014), Joburg Noir (2010) as well as Culture and the Liberation Struggle in South Africa (2021). His book of South African musical biographies, From Kippie to Kippies: Group Portraits of SA Artists is
published by Themba Books, founded and run by respected academic, theatre personality and author, Dr Robert McLaren.

Discussant: Professor Samuel Ravengai teaches drama at the Wits School of the Arts, East Campus in Braamfontein.

DJ: DJ Okapi is a selector and journalist who runs Afrosynth Records, a label primarily consumed with unearthing and preserving South African disco of the 80s and early 90s, as well as showcasing today’s local jazz scene.
