Book Launch: A History of Disappearance by Sarah Lubala

The Commune hosted an in-person launch of A History of Disappearance by Sarah Lubala.

The themes addressed in this poetry anthology include forced migration, displacement, xenophobia, gender, sexual violence, mental illness, memory, and remembering. 

Poet: Sarah Lubala is a Congolese-born poet. Her family fled the Democratic Republic of Congo two decades ago, amidst political unrest, when militant factions tried to overthrow the dictator, Mobutu Sese Seko. Sarah has been twice shortlisted for the Gerald Kraak Award, and once for The Brittle Paper Poetry Award, and has been longlisted for the Sol Plaatje EU Poetry Award. She is also the winner of the Castello Di Duino XIV prize.

Discussant: Elna Schütz is a freelance journalist working in audio: she also writes for local and international media. Elna is the founder of Podmeet, a networking project for podcasters. She loves a good story in any medium and frequently works across news, human rights, culture, and health issues. In her spare time, Elna enjoys poetry, literature and art.
