by Todd Matshikiza
The Jazz opera King Kong took South Africa by storm in the early 1960s, and launched the careers of artists like Miriam Makeba. The music was composed by Todd Matshikiza, who also worked on Drum magazine during the fifties. He and his family travelled to London with the cast of King Kong, and Chocolates for my wife is the account of their experiences. In his wry, vivacious, coruscating style, he contrasts their London adventures with the life they left behind in Orlando, Sophiatown and Alexandra Township. First published in 1961, it this was reissued as an Africasouth Paperback in 1985.
